Chapter 5: The Handmade Chocolate Incident
Heading home, at night. Headlights and taillights went by. The falling snow matched the color of my coat. The cold wind was blowing, and I covered my neck with my trench coat. Satoshi walked beside me. With his drawstring bag in hand and burdened with his backpack, all he had to fight off the cold was his vest.
“The Valentine’s chocolate was stolen by tying it to her leg, huh?”
I muttered my earlier words back to myself and laughed.
”That wouldn’t have been possible, don’t you think?”
“And here I thought you were just going about it in a logical manner,”
Satoshi said, twirling his drawstring bag. I laughed at that as well.
“No, that wasn’t it.”
“The other female student wouldn’t have known that Ibara had decided to leave her chocolate in the club room. And even if she did, Chitanda was watching over it, and she wouldn’t have expected her to leave to go looking for you.”
“But it may have been possible?”
“Even if it was, then it’s just a possibility. Satoshi, the chocolate would melt due to body warmth. And when chocolate melts, it gives off a unique scent. It’s impossible to hide it with that. And most of all…”
As we were at the middle of the crossing, the pedestrian signal started to flash. Hurrying across, I looked back at Satoshi.
“A normal human being wouldn’t even think of stealing something like a Valentine’s chocolate.”
Satoshi gave a bitter smile and,
“There’s no guaranteeing that Nakayama-san is a decent person.”
“A decent person wouldn’t pick a fight from the start, so it’s natural to be suspicious.”
The sidewalk was faintly piled up with snow. Our every step made creaking leather noises. For a while, a strong wind blew. I endured it using my own shoulder. I waited for the wind to calm down and said.
“First, I have to fulfill my promise.”
